Renewal of Driving Licence after Expiry: A Complete Procedure

A driving licence is a key document that any person driving a motor vehicle needs to carry along with them, therefore it becomes equally important to renew it once the driving licence gets expired. What is the procedure to apply for renewal of a driving licence?

The government has given the facility to apply for the DL renewal either through online or offline mode. The online procedure to apply for the DL renewal involves a series of steps that a person needs to complete. These steps include the filling of the application form, submitting the documents, paying the fee to the registering authority and then finally visiting the RTO on the booked appointment slot.

While applying online, the application and fees are submitted using the government authorized portal. It might save you a lot of time if you are applying for the renewal of DL online through government websites designed especially for transport-related tasks. If you feel an online mode of application is more convenient for you, then you can follow the below-mentioned steps:

  1. Open the link, parivahan.gov.in/parivahan
  2. Press “online services” on the homepage and then select ‘Driving licence related services’ from the drop-down menu
  3. Choose the name of your state
  4.  A new page will open, select DL services
  5. Press Continue, then, fill in your details, including your DL number, date of birth, state, etc
  6. Click on Proceed, and you will be redirected to a new page
  7. Verify all your details mentioned on the page
  8. Submit your mobile number, qualification and address and press the Confirm tab
  9. Proceed further and select Renewal of DL
  10. Generate application number and upload all the relevant documents
  11. Upload your photograph and signature

Procedure for Online Appointment for Renewal of Driving Licence

The second stage of online application for renewal of Driving Licence is booking the slot or an appointment. An applicant needs to visit the RTO on the date and time as booked by him/her along with the documents, printed application form and fee receipt. To book an appointment, applicants can use the slot booking option. Before booking the slot, you must however check the availability of the slot. Applicants need not to submit any extra fee online for booking the appointment online apart from the application fee.

How to Check Renewal Status of Driving Licence?

If you have applied for renewal of a driving licence, you can check the renewal status online through the Parivahan Sewa portal, designed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). To check the renewal status of your DL from the Parivahan Sewa portal, follow these steps:

  1. Visit https://parivahan.gov.in/parivahan/
  2. Select Online Services and then click on Driving Licence Related Services
  3. Choose your state from the drop-down menu
  4. Next, click on the “Apply Online’ menu and then select the icon ‘Application Status’
  5. Enter your application number, date of birth and captcha code
  6. After you click on the Submit button, you will get to see all information related to your DL application

Cost/Fees for renewal of driving licence

The fees for the renewal of a driving licence may vary depending on whether you have applied for the renewal within the grace period or after the grace period. In case you have applied for the renewal within the grace period, you would be required to pay Rs 200 as an application fee. If the grace period is over, then you need to pay the late fees of Rs 1000 along with the applicable fee for the renewal of driving licence.

Documents Required for Renewal of Driving Licence

Out of many steps involved in the application process, one of the key steps for getting your driving licence renewed is the submission of the documents to the respective RTO. Here is the list of documents required for renewal of driving licence:

  • Form 9 or the application form
  • Form 1A (For those who are above 40 years of age)
  • A copy of the expired driving licence
  • Passport-size photograph
  • Aadhar card or PAN card
  • Age proof
  • Address proof

RTO Forms Used for Renewal of Driving Licence

There’s a specific RTO form that you need to submit to the Registering authority in order to apply for the driving licence renewal. RTO form 9 serves as a report to the RTO that a person wants to apply for renewal of DL. An applicant needs to fill form 9 and mention all the relevant information about the existing DL. After filling the form, it has to be submitted to the RTO with the rest of the documents. Besides form 9, an applicant has to submit RTO form 1A or the medical fitness declaration if he/she is above 40 years of age. Both these forms are available at the RTO or can be downloaded online.

If you apply for the DL renewal within the grace period, you need not to give the driving test again. However, if the grace period has passed and you are applying for the renewal after one year of the expiry of licence, then you need to take the driving test again as the authority would consider you as a new applicant.
There’s a grace period of 30 days within which a driving licence holder should apply for the renewal. If your driving licence expired and you have not applied for the renewal within this grace period, you might have to pay a late fee along with the application fee.
Those applying for the renewal of driving licence do not require an NOC or a no-objection certificate from the Regional Transport Office.
For renewal of driving licence, a medical certificate or form 1A is required if the applicant is above the age of 40 or drives a commercial vehicle.
Once the grace period has passed, you would be required to pay Rs 1000 along with the application fee for the renewal of lapsed driving licence.
