Driving Licence Assam: Online Application Process, Documents Required, Fees and Renewal Process

In India, anyone above the age of 18 needs to have a valid driving licence if they wish to ply on the roads in the country. This has been mandated by the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, that clearly mentions that it is essential for a driver of motor vehicles to have a valid driving licence, and this rule is applicable to all states in India. Thus, as per law, if you wish to drive on the roads in Assam, you must be in possession of a valid driving licence. Learn how to get a driving licence in Assam, the fee structure and the renewal process.

Types of Driving Licence in Assam

In general, there are two types of driving licences that you can get in Assam. These are:

  1. LEARNER’S LICENCE

This type of licence is issued to those who are learning how to drive a motor vehicle. For driving a gearless motorcycle, you must be minimum of 16 years in age, and for Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) and above you must be minimum of 18 years in age. As per regulations, in order to get a learner’s permit in Assam, the applicant should have ample knowledge of the traffic laws and rules in the country.

After you get your learner’s licence, you will then be eligible for practicing your driving skills on the roads, provided you are accompanied by a valid driving licence holder in the vehicle.

  2. PERMANENT LICENCE

Once you have perfected your driving skills, you can then apply for a permanent licence. A permanent driving licence is an official document that gives you the permission to drive a motor vehicle on the roads in India, depending on the type of motor vehicle the licence has been made for.

To get a permanent licence, you need a learner’s permit first. Then, 30 days after obtaining your learner’s licence and within 120 days from the date of issuance of the learner’s licence, you can apply for a permanent driving licence.
