Types of Driving Licence in Odisha

Driving licences in India are issued on the basis of the type of vehicle and the purpose behind the transportation (commercial or non-commercial). However, there are two types of driving licence in India, which is also applicable in the state of Odisha. These are:

  1. LEARNER LICENCE

A learner’s licence or a learner’s permit in Odisha is issued to those who wish to learn how to drive. It is crucial to obtain a learner’s licence and pass a test before you can get a permanent licence in Odisha. A simple test to gauge the applicant’s knowledge regarding the traffic rules and regulations in the country is taken and then a learner’s licence is issued. For driving a motorcycle without gear, the applicant must be minimum 16 years of age. For other types of motor vehicles, the applicant needs to be at least 18 years of age.

  2. PERMANENT LICENCE

30 days after getting your learner’s licence, or within 120 days from the date of issuance of the learner’s permit, you can apply for a permanent licence. After you apply, you are required to take a driving test where your driving skills are evaluated. With a permanent licence, you will be authorised to legally drive on the roads in India. A permanent licence is issued on the basis of the type of motor vehicle you are capable of driving, such as a gearless motorcycle, a motorcycle with a gear, a light motor vehicle or a commercial vehicle.
