Duplicate RC: How to Get Duplicate Registration Certificate Online for Your Vehicle
A registration certificate (RC) is an important vehicle-related document which specifies that a particular vehicle is registered under the government of India. It is mandatory for a vehicle owner to obtain a registration certificate according to the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act, 1988. You cannot drive a vehicle on roads without an RC, hence in case your RC has been lost or stolen, it becomes important to apply for a duplicate RC.
How to get a duplicate RC book for car/bike online?
You can get a duplicate RC book for your car or bike either through online or offline mode. For offline mode, you need to visit your local RTO office along with the relevant documents. To apply online, you need to submit your application along with the documents and fees through an online portal. It must be noted that the online method only enables you to submit the application and fees, and the rest of the formalities need to be done by visiting the RTO. If you want to apply for a duplicate RC from the comfort of your home, then you can apply online by following the below steps:
Step 1: Open the website, https://parivahan.gov.in/parivahan/
Step 2: Check the online services and select the option to apply for a duplicate RC
Step 3: Fill out an application form online at Parivahan Sewa website and submit the required details such as registration number, chassis number, etc.
Step 4: You need to submit the information of the lodged FIR if your RC has been stolen
Step 5: Enter the vehicle insurance policy details as well
Step 6: Schedule an appointment and choose a time slot as per your convenience
Step 7: Submit the application fee
Step 8: Download the fee receipt and visit the RTO on the allotted date and time along with the receipt and documents.
Duplicate RC Fees in India
The fees to get a duplicate RC in India may vary as per the motor vehicle category. For instance, the duplicate RC fees in India for a light motor vehicle like cars, heeps, taxis, vans, etc is about Rs 700. However, this might not be the fee for a vehicle belonging to any other category. You need to pay the fee as specified in Rule 81 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989.
Documents required to obtain a duplicate vehicle RC
A key step involved in the application process for obtaining a duplicate RC is the submission of documents at the RTO. It is worth mentioning that you will be issued a duplicate RC only after the concerned authority has verified your documents. Here’s the complete list of documents that you are supposed to take to the RTO for obtaining a duplicate vehicle RC:
- Application in Form 26
- Police certificate
- PUC certificate
- An insurance certificate
- Address proof
- Challan clearance from traffic police
- Tax clearance from the Accounts Department (in case of a commercial vehicle)
- A copy of PAN Card
- An affidavit mentioning that RC has been lost not impounded

In case you have accidentally misplaced your vehicle’s RC or it has been stolen, you need to apply for a duplicate RC as you cannot drive your vehicle without a valid registration certificate. As Regional Transport Offices carry out vehicle-related functions including the issuance of duplicate RC, you need to submit an application to RTO in form 26.
Basically, a person shall report about the lost RC to the concerned RTO authorities in RTO form 26. However, before submitting form 26 to RTO, it is necessary to file an FIR at the nearest police station.
