Different Ways to Check Your Vehicle Insurance

Whether you have been part of an accident, or are filling up paperwork pertaining to your vehicle, you would want to be able to look up and check your vehicle insurance information in case you do not have your insurance details available at hand. You can easily look up your insurance details, or of another vehicle involved in an accident, through the Insurance Information Bureau (IIB) website. IIB or the Insurance Information Bureau of India, introduced by IRDAI, is a data bank that collects and stores information for the insurance sector in India.

Along with that, you also check the information of the vehicle owner and get to know the status of the vehicle’s insurance via the Vahan e-service website.

Check Vehicle Insurance Details Through Insurance Information Bureau website

To check your vehicle insurance details through the Insurance Information Bureau website, the following procedure needs to be observed:

Step 1: Visit the Insurance Information Bureau official website

Step 2: Select the ‘V Seva’ tab underneath the Quick Links section

Step 3: You will then be redirected to the Accident Vehicle Information Retrieval System page, where you will have to fill in the following details:

  • Name
  • Email ID
  • Mobile Number
  • Address
  • Registration Number of the vehicle, or engine number, or chassis number
  • Accident date
  • Accident place

Step 4: Click on the Submit button

Once your details have been submitted, you will be able to see the insurance details of the vehicle. In case the current insurance policy details are not available, the page will display the previous policy details.

The Insurance Information Bureau has certain search guidelines in place that you must follow while looking up details on the IIB website. The guidelines state that:

  • It is mandatory to enter the vehicle’s registration number. The registration number should be entered without using any special characters (Eg. DL10AT0123).
  • You can only search up to 3 times for a particular mobile number or email address.
  • For insurance providers, the time taken to submit the policy data to IIB can take up to two months. Hence, there may be instances where the vehicle’s insurance data may not appear due to the time lag.
  • At the time of issuing the policy, insurance providers only submit the chassis and engine number for new vehicles.
  • The data at IIB is only for vehicles that have been insured for the period starting from 1st April, 2010.

In case the policy details of the vehicle are not available on the IIB website, then you can also visit the concerned RTO to obtain the information.
