This law, as stated in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, is applicable to all states in India, including Karnataka. Read on to know how to obtain a driving licence in Karnataka, the fee structure and the application process.

Types of Driving Licence in Karnataka

In general, there are two types of driving licences that you can get in Karnataka. These are:

  1. LEARNER LICENCE

This type of licence is issued to those who are learning how to drive a motor vehicle. For driving a gearless motorcycle, you must be minimum of 16 years in age, and for Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) and above you must be minimum of 18 years in age. According to the law, in order to get a learner’s permit in Karnataka, the applicant should have ample knowledge of the traffic laws and rules in the country.

After you get your learner’s licence, you will then be eligible for practicing your driving skills on the roads, provided you are accompanied by a valid driving licence holder in the vehicle.

  2. PERMANENT LICENCE

Once you are confident in your driving skills, you can then apply for a permanent licence. A permanent driving licence is an official document that gives you the permission to drive a motor vehicle on the roads in India, depending on the type of motor vehicle the licence has been made for.

To get a permanent licence, you need a learner’s permit first. Then, 30 days after obtaining your learner’s licence and within 120 days from the date of issuance of the learner’s licence, you can apply for a permanent driving licence.
