Re-registration of Vehicle After 15 Years in India: The Steps You Should Follow for Renewal of Registration
A Registration Certificate is a key document issued by the Regional Transport Offices in India. An RC serves as proof that the vehicle is legally registered with the Government of India. This significant document has to be carried by the driver while driving the vehicle. According to the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, it is mandatory for vehicle owners to register their motor vehicle at the RTO. Thus, you cannot drive the vehicle on public roads without a valid Registration Certificate. What is Re-registration of a Vehicle?
According to the Central Motor Vehicles Act, it is mandatory for all vehicles to be re-registered once the RC expires. A registration certificate is valid for 15 years from the date of issuance after which it gets renewed for a time period of 5 years.
For re-registration of the vehicle, an application has to be submitted to the RTO in form 25. The vehicle gets inspected by the RTO only after which the RC gets renewed. An appropriate fee has to be paid as well along with the submission of relevant documents for the re-registration of a vehicle after 15 years.
Cost or Fees for Re-registration of a Vehicle
For Re-registration of the vehicle at the RTO, an application fee has to be submitted at the cash counter after which a new registration certificate is issued to the vehicle owner. At present, the fee for re-registration of a two-wheeler is Rs 300 and for a four-wheeler is Rs 600. However, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced a hike in the application fee and it is expected to increase by 25 times. Thus, the renewal fee for a two-wheeler can cost up to Rs 2000 and Rs 15,000 for a four-wheeler once the new proposal comes into effect.
Documents Required for Renewal of Registration After 15 Years
While applying for re-registration of a vehicle at the Regional Transport Offices in India, a vehicle owner is required to submit relevant documents along with the application form and fees. These documents include:
- Application in Form 25
- Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate
- Original RC of the vehicle
- Insurance copy of the vehicle
- A copy of PAN card
- Engine number and chassis number of vehicle
- Signature Identification document
- Identity proof
- Address proof
How to Apply for Re-registration of Vehicle
There are certain steps you need to follow in order to apply for re-registration of the vehicle.
Step 1: Get a No Objection Certificate (NOC)
You need to get a NOC from the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) affirming that the vehicle is not stolen and from the financer in Form 35 if the motor vehicle has an active loan. To get NOC from the RTO in case of re-register in another state, form 27 and 28 have to be submitted to the RTO.
Step 2: Submit the documents at the RTO
Apart from the application form, documents such as insurance copy, original RC, PUC certificate and the original invoice of the vehicle has to be submitted. Apart from this, identity proof, address proof, Chassis imprint copy and signature identification documents are to be submitted as well.
Step 3: Payment of fees and road tax
Once you submit the documents and it gets verified by the Registering Authority, you need to next pay the application fee as well as road tax. You must keep the road tax receipt and fee receipt safely for future reference. If you have re-registered your vehicle in another state, then you can apply for a tax refund at the former RTO.
