Ideally, a temporary registration number should be assigned to the vehicle even before it leaves the showroom. It is necessary for vehicle owners to apply for a permanent registration number within one month of getting the temporary number.

How to Check Temporary Registration Status of Your Vehicle
To check the application status for any vehicle-related services, open the Vahan portal. Click on the Status tab on the home page. Select “Know your application status” from the drop down menu. Enter your application number and click on the Submit tab to check the status of your application. In case you are unable to check the temporary registration status of your vehicle, you should check with the RTO or vehicle dealer to know the status.
How to Download a Temporary Registration Form for Your Car/Bike?
To submit an application for a temporary number for your vehicle, form 21 is required. You can get the form from the Registering Authority or download it online. To download the temporary registration form, follow these steps:

Temporary Registration Extension Process
The temporary registration number is valid only for 1 month within which the vehicle owner should submit an application for a permanent registration number. However, it is possible to extend the duration of validity for the temporary registration if you still have not yet applied for a permanent registration number.
Extension Process
To extend the temporary registration of your vehicle, you need to submit an application to the Registering Authority. A vehicle owner needs to specify the reason behind the extension as well as the time period for which the temporary registration has to be extended. A person can apply for an extension of up to 2 times. If you are applying for an extension for the second time, you have to pay the penalty according to the Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989.

MoRTH Guidelines for Temporary Vehicle Registration
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has revised the guidelines for temporary vehicle registration. number plates on vehicles. These norms are applicable to all the categories of vehicles.
It is an offence to write a temporary registration number on paper and paste it on the vehicle as per the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR). Also, it is mandatory for vehicles to have a temporary registration number written on the plate in Arabic numerals and English letters only. Nothing else is allowed to be written on the registration plate.
For a temporary registration number, the plate must have red letters or numerals on a yellow background. For dealer vehicles, white letters are allowed on a red background. Electric vehicles are supposed to use yellow letters or numbers on a green background. Regional language should not be used on the number plate. These guidelines need to be followed by all the vehicles including VIP numbers.
The guidelines also list the dimensions for the registration number plate according to which all motor vehicles except two and three-wheelers, the height, thickness and space have to be 65 mm, 10 mm and 10 mm.
