This cess exemption has been elevated from 25 per cent to a 100 per cent and is slated to be of help to more than 7 lakh commercial vehicles in the state of Haryana.
According to the government, for the month of June, school buses, stage carriage and contract carriage buses will be exempted from paying 100 per cent of the tax, whereas autos, maxi cabs, taxis and special purpose vehicles will have a 50 per cent exemption for them. For goods vehicles and private service vehicles, the tax exemption has been decided at 25 per cent.
For the month of July, school buses will continue to be 100 per cent exempted from tax, meanwhile state carriage buses will have a 75 per cent tax waiver. For autos, maxi cabs and taxis, a 25 per cent exemption will be discharged. However, for goods vehicles, contract carriage buses, special purpose vehicles and private service vehicles, no tax exemption will be applicable in July.
According to Sunil Kumar, President, Haryana Cooperative Transport Society Welfare Association, “Now, the state government has allowed the buses to ply as per the schedule with half seating capacity, but the number of passengers is negligible on the majority of routes. Hence, we were demanding a tax waiver.”. The nationwide lockdown had added to huge financial losses to the private bus owners in the state, so the tax waiver was necessary, he added.
Virender Singh Sehrawat, Additional Transport Commissioner, Haryana, confirmed the government’s approval of the tax exemption, saying that the authorities will soon issue a notification regarding the same.
